Former INXS band promoter Wendell Parnell creates first singalong event West End Vs Broadway at The Camfield

Wendell Parnell has been a drummer, an agent and 1980s band promoter to an enviable list of acts from INXS and John Farnham to Tina Turner.

From looking after their riders to ensuring their dressing rooms were in order, he recalls those days as being more fun than hard work and has many stories he could tell, not that he would.

Now East Perth-based Parnell is turning to his first love — musical theatre — with his company Sing Out Loud hosting its inaugural event West End Vs Broadway at The Camfield on October 27.

“I’m a romantic,” 72-year-old Parnell said.

“That’s why I’ve seen The Phantom of the Opera 52 times. Theatre is where you go and lose yourself for two hours and not worry about anybody else.

“It’s a wonderful world. It’s not like being at the football where everybody’s screaming around you and you can actually feel the love on stage. And everything’s live, so there’s no second take.”

West End Vs Broadway is the first cab off the rank for Parnell’s company — others in the pipeline include Madonna Vs Kylie Minogue — inspired by the international popularity of similar all-ages singalong events such as the UK’s Massaoke.

“It’s all about getting people together to have a good time,” Parnell said.

“We’re doing it in the beer garden with a big screen, so we’ll put all the words up if you want to sing along to some of the most popular Broadway and West End musicals from the last 20 years.”

DJ Al Black will spin the set list including music from Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Mamma Mia, The Lion King and more. Former Mod Squad frontman Ian Falk will MC the evening featuring giveaways and a people’s choice award for the best costume.

“I’ll be doing my best singing too and I’m looking forward to seeing people having a good evening,” Parnell said.

“I’m not in the stage of my life where I need a financial reward. This venture is more the heart and not the pocket talking.”

Sing Out Loud presents West End Vs Broadway at The Camfield, Burswood, October 27. Tickets at eventbrite.com.

Who is the INXS song ‘Suicide Blonde’ about?

Who is the INXS song ‘Suicide Blonde’ about?

The success of Australian rock band INXS was tragically clouded by the suicide of their magnetic frontman, Michael Hutchence. Before his passing, the band spent 20 years creating a sound that combined new wave, rock, and funk, releasing 1986’s ‘What You Need’ to substantial commercial success. But the sad fact remains that their spell together as a band has often been associated with Hutchence’s darkest moment.

That they had a hit that referenced suicide in the title was an unfortunate coincidence, and the lyrics to 1990’s ‘Suicide Blonde’ have often been wrongly accused of having a thematic darkness that foreshadowed Hutchence’s death: “Don’t you know what you’re doing / You’ve got a death wish / Suicide blonde,” the lyrics read.

Written by INXS’ primary songwriters Andrew Fariss and Hutchence, the song was actually inspired by Kylie Minogue, Hutchence’s girlfriend at the time. Minogue had told him she was planning to style her hair a “suicide blonde” and debuted this new look alongside Hutchence at the premiere of The Delinquents. It wasn’t the first time Minogue had a hand in an uncharacteristically dark Aussie rock track, and it was Hutchence who first introduced her to Nick Cave for 1995’s ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow’.

After the release of 1987’s Kick, INXS reached a newfound level of stardom, supporting the album with a massive tour in 1988 and 1989. But getting the band back into the studio to make a follow-up was a challenge, given Hutchence had just kicked off a side project, Max Q, with his old friends.

INXS’ label, Atlantic, indulged Hutchence, releasing the album in 1989. But they were keen to get INXS prepped for a new release. Kick producer Chris Thomas was brought back into the fold and encouraged Farriss and Hutchence to play to their songwriting strengths as they had done on X. Fariss had suggested to Hutchence that they use the sound of a blues harp on this album, having heard blues musician Charlie Musselwhite play around Australia. On ‘Suicide Blonde’, they used samples of his on the track, and his harmonica was also a feature on ‘On My Way’ and ‘Who Pays The Price’.

‘Suicide Blonde’ was their first single from the album and became a huge hit. X, on the whole, however, marked a concerted dip in sales as they pushed in a slightly different musical direction. Although the song’s uneasy title might not have helped, it was a concert favourite, and the band continued to perform it following Hutchence’s death – because it had no inherent link to suicide other than its name.

Tragically, though, it was the last song Hutchence ever performed live. The crowd pleaser was the closing song at the last INXS show before his death, a concert in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, on September 27th, 1997.

Jet inducted into ARIA Hall of Fame over Delta Goodrem and other iconic Australian musicians

If you had to think of an Australian band or performer from the past three decades worthy of being added to the pantheon of our greatest ever artists – alongside the likes of Kylie Minogue, INXS and Yothu Yindi – who comes to mind?

Silverchair? Powderfinger? The Presets? Delta Goodrem? The Avalanches? All seem worthy, but all are yet to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, the most prestigious prize an Australian musician can receive.

How about Jet, the Melbourne band who released their debut album Get Born in 2003 to massive commercial success, followed it up with two less-than-stellar records, disbanded in 2012 and reformed in 2017 to play live shows? Um, really?

This week, Jet became the first musicians since Archie Roach to join the Hall of Fame, news that neatly coincides with their upcoming 20th anniversary tour which is yet to sell out. The announcement has drawn a mixed reaction, especially since the band is being inducted ahead of many other acts who had a bigger impact on the Australian music scene and peaked around the same time.

The question of whether Jet “deserves” to be considered alongside Midnight Oil, Divinyls and Paul Kelly really comes down to what the ARIA Hall of Fame is recognising. The main argument in favour of the recognition: Get Born sold over four million copies worldwide, an extraordinary feat for an Australia band. Its lead single, Are You Gonna Be My Girl, was ubiquitous, hitting number one on the Hottest 100 and featuring in a global iPod commercial. Beyond that, though, the arguments for their entry are pretty slim.

Jet’s sound, which they have admitted is derivative, as well as their follow-up albums that failed to excite critics and audiences, make it hard to see the band’s influence on the generations of Australian artists who have followed in their wake.

Given how notoriously insular and fearful of criticism the Australian music industry is, I’m sure there are Jet fans sharpening their pitchforks right now. But the argument isn’t that the band is objectively bad (though many have made that case), or that they don’t deserve recognition for being wildly popular in the early 2000s, it’s that the Hall of Fame is surely about something bigger than acknowledging a band that had one successful record 20 years ago.

Since the Hall of Fame was introduced in 1988 it has celebrated more than 80 iconic Australian bands and artists. Only 11 have been women, or women-fronted bands. Meanwhile, 11 men have featured twice, in their capacities as solo artists and separately as members of an inducted band. There are three Indigenous acts and only one woman of colour (Marcia Hines).

From disco to Bowie, Madonna and INXS plus Daft Punk: Five songs that shaped Chic icon Nile Rodgers

Disco legend Nile Rodgers and his band Chic return to Australia in October for capital city dates, including a show in Fremantle.

Best known for creating hits such as Le Freak, Everybody Dance, I Want Your Love and the much-sampled Good Times with his bass-playing Chic partner Bernie Edwards, Rodgers is also a prolific producer and influential guitarist.

Here are five more classics that have his Midas touch.

WE ARE FAMILY by Sister Sledge

The Sledge siblings from Philadelphia struggled until they combined with Rodgers and Edwards for breakthrough single, He’s the Greatest Dancer, in 1979 followed by this global smash and all-time party favourite. We Are Family was also the first song the duo penned for an act other than Chic.

David Bowie - Let's Dance

LET’S DANCE by David Bowie

Despite being best known for working with Sister Sledge, Diana Ross and other acts from the then desperately uncool disco genre, David Bowie tapped Rodgers for his 1983 album Let’s Dance. While the record featured singles Modern Love and China Girl, the title track — accompanied with a video shot in the rural NSW town of Carinda — became Bowie’s biggest ever hit.

Recorded in Rodgers’ Power Station studio in New York and featuring vocals from Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates), Original Sin was the lead single of INXS’ first No. 1 album, The Swing. The song was also the only track on the album Rodgers’ produced, but it displayed the international ambitions of Michael Hutchence, songwriting partner Andrew Farriss and the rest of the Aussie band.

LIKE A VIRGIN by Madonna

Rodgers’ golden run in the 80s continued when Madge heard Let’s Dance and demanded the studio wizard weave a little magic on her second album, which went on to become one of the highest selling of all-time. While it features signature song Material Girl and dance hit Dress You Up, the controversial Like a Virgin really established Madonna as an unstoppable cultural iconoclast.

GET LUCKY by Daft Punk

Despite records with the B-52s, Duran Duran and David Lee Roth, the decades dominated by grunge and alternative rock were fallow for Rodgers, who kept himself busy with Chic reunion tours, soundtrack and video game work, plus his excellent autobiography.

That was until French electronic duo Daft Punk collaborated with the legend on three tracks on 2013’s Random Access Memories. The album was huge but single Get Lucky, featuring acolyte Pharrell Williams, was a worldwide mega-smash and introduced a whole new generation to the disco-era genius.

Nile Rodgers and Chic play Fremantle Prison on October 27. Tickets go on sale September 7.
