There’s something new brewing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio this year when it comes to cold beverages.

Decked out with a bright red bar top and stools and with eye-catching bottles lining the back shelves, The New Bar, located within the 12 Peaks VIP area and the general admission Indio Central Market on-site, looks and pretty much feels like a regular, but higher-end bar.

On Friday, April 14 — the first day of the first weekend of Coachella, which returns April 21-23 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio — New Bar bartenders were meticulously mixing crafted cocktails like the tequila-flavored Mojave Agave, the whiskey inspired Polo Buck and the sparkling Super Bloom Spritz wine drink.

While these drinks packed in a lot of flavor, none of them packed an alcoholic punch because all of the booze at The New Bar was not really booze at all.

“It’s really unique and exciting because usually when you go somewhere and there’s a non-alcoholic option it’s usually one thing and it’s usually a beer, but in this case we have a full menu the way you would expect at a typical bar, but without a hangover,” said Brianda Gonzalez, the 28-year-old founder of the Venice-based alcohol-free bottle shop. The New Bar is making its Coachella debut in 2023, marking the first time the festival has partnered with a fully non-alcoholic bar.

“We noticed a non-alcohol trend so we wanted to have New Bar on site,” said Lizzy Curnen, culinary director for the festival. “Their cocktails are delicious; I definitely recommend hitting up The New Bar.”

Gonzalez grew up on Catalina Island and now lives in Venice three blocks from her bottle shop, which she opened in July 2022.

She was inspired to open the alcohol-free shop after her father came down with an illness.

“My father was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and he had to give up alcohol. Food and drink had always played a big role in how we gathered and bonded together and so that kind of threw me into this whole category,” she said.

Comedian Kevin Hart tops bill for 2023 San Diego County Fair

DEL MAR — Fair officials announced a slate of entertainers, including comedian Kevin Hart, who will take the stage this summer for the 2023 San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, with tickets now on sale for general entry and grandstand shows.

This year’s fair will run from June 7 through July 4 with the theme “Get Out There!,” a celebration of the great outdoors and the region’s parks. Tickets went on sale on April 8, and around 4,500 grandstand tickets have already been snapped up. 

Along with the popular carnival, delicious food, livestock shows and exhibitions, 11 grandstand performers have been confirmed, with more to be announced in the coming weeks. These include performances from Train, who will take the stage on opening night, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Switchfoot, La Adictiva, Boys II Men and Stephen Marley. 

At the April 11 meeting of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, the state board overseeing the fairgrounds, officials announced that Hart will perform on June 9.

“We’ve got quite a diverse lineup from what we’ve had in the past,” said Fairgrounds COO Katie Mueller. “This is a little taste of what’s coming.”

All fair tickets are available online this year. Depending on the day, prices range from $15 to $20 for adults and $12 to $17 for those over the age of 62 and under the age of 12. Admission is free all days for youth ages 5 and younger and on Fridays only for those ages 6 to 12. 

Grandstand shows will take place on select nights at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for grandstand shows also include fair admission for that day. 

Carnival tickets, including promotional deals for bonus tickets, go on sale April 22. 

Fair officials gave a sneak peek of several other planned entertainment and activities. There will be local musical entertainment in the paddock throughout the fair and a Get Out There Challenge where residents can earn prizes for visiting and taking photos at regional parks.

The 2023 fair will also feature the first-ever Fair-tastic Food Competition, in which fair concessionaires will be challenged to create amazing sweet and savory dishes in the following categories — foods reflecting the fair theme, foods with a “wow” factor, and value foods at discounted prices.

“We’re hoping to make this an annual event,” Mueller said. 

Visitors can also enjoy various festivals taking place throughout the fair. There will be three free festivals in the paddock — Out at the Fair Festival on June 10, the Asian and Pacific Islander Festival on June 17 and the Gospel Festival on June 22. 

Tickets will also be available for two festivals taking place at the Fairgrounds’ new music venue, The Sound. The Toast of the Coast Wine Festival takes place on June 17, followed by the International Beer and Distilled Spirit and Cocktail Festival on July 1. 

The 2023 San Diego County Fair will take place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. The fair is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, in addition to Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

For example, when I was talking to my child, he often just focused on the meal and ignored me. This behavior would often provoke my “fatherly” reactions, and the kind atmosphere would sour. Now when encountering children who seem ignorant or disobedient, I seldom react with anger.

Enhances Memory

During the period when I was studying TCM and preparing for the exam, I would meditate every night, close my eyes, and rest my mind, thinking about nothing but what I had read that day, the so-called “review while meditating.” As a result, even though it has been more than 30 years now, I can still remember almost all I read before. I guess this must have something to do with meditation.

Lets You Fall Asleep as Soon as You Lie Down

Another advantage of sitting in meditation is that it makes the mind go into a completely silent state and get rid of all the other noises. The result is, I often fall asleep as soon as I lie down, and I feel better after sleeping and can focus on the work again easily during the day.

Enhances Immunity, With Less Reliance on Medicine

Meditation can enhance immunity. For more than 30 years, because of meditation, I have been in good health and seldom need to take medicine. There is also no need to spend money on vitamins, mineral supplements, or various nutritional products.

I would suggest the followers of this program try meditation twice a week. For example, on Saturdays and Sundays, sit quietly for 15 to 20 minutes each time, or even longer, without thinking about anything else. Let yourself escape into a completely quiet state. When you can calm down, you will find that the more you sit still, the longer you’ll want to do it.

2. Eat Seasonal Vegetables and Fruits

I don’t spend a lot of effort worrying about food, clothing, housing, and transportation. Usually, my diet is light, I seldom engage in extravagant banquets, and usually eat meals at home.

Whenever there is bento (lunch box) ordered in the clinic where I work, I will eat bento like everybody else. Otherwise, I’ll just make myself something simple to eat.

Whenever you want to stir-fry vegetables, do it in the simplest way. Stir-fry vegetables with lard, olive oil, or salad oil, add a little salt, and that’s it. When buying vegetables, choose what are in season, which are not only the freshest but also the most delicious. There is almost no need to add any other seasonings—just enjoy their natural flavor. Choose seasonal fruits, as well.

Most importantly, I don’t eat raw food, and I rarely eat lettuce salads either. Some raw vegetables can cause problems such as goiter or parasitic infection. I also don’t drink much ice water.

3. Maintain Healthy Teeth

When the teeth are strong, the body can better absorb the nutrients from food. That’s why I pay special attention to the maintenance of my teeth.

Chen Xiuyuan, an eminent physician in the Qing Dynasty, had a tooth-powder remedy: “Gu Chi Shen Fang (recipe for strengthening the teeth).” The recipe included green salt, gypsum, psoralen, pepper, angelica, mint, Eclipta prostrata, and parsnip (Saposhnikoviae radix), which can all be used to brush your teeth or as a mouthwash.

After I brush my teeth with this mixture, I put the water with tooth powder in my mouth, take a bath, and let my teeth soak in the tooth powder the whole time, which is good for both the gums and teeth, and can prevent tooth inflammation and decay.

Chen Xiuyuan once wrote that if a person brushes his teeth with this remedy from the age of 3 or 4, he can keep his teeth “solid until old age, and never suffer from dental problems.”

4. Recharge Your Spirit With Music and Performances

In my spare time, I listen to fine music, enjoy watching performances, and view fine artwork.

According to TCM, the “five tones” in music, jiao (mi), zheng (sol), gong (do), shang (re), and yu (la), correspond to the “five internal organs” of human beings: liver, heart, spleen, lung, and kidney. Listening to the right music can soothe the nerves and benefit the corresponding organs.

  • Listening to the jiao tune can soothe the spirit

Whenever you are suspicious of something affecting any of the five viscera, try listening to the music of the corresponding tune.

I occasionally listen to very slow-paced music inside my consultation room. There are two pieces of music called “Pudu” and “Jishi.” Once, when I was playing these pieces of music, a patient in my clinic fell asleep unexpectedly. He later told me, “I haven’t slept well for a long time, but after hearing such nice music here, I fell asleep unconsciously while sitting.”

Watching artistic performances can also give people positive energy. For more than 10 years, I used to go to performances of the well-known U.S. group “Shen Yun Performing Arts” every year. The content of its performances is always on traditional Chinese culture.

There was once a program that played the story of Hua Mulan joining the army in place of her father, which moved me deeply. At that time, whenever I thought of Hua Mulan, there were tears in my eyes.

In the performance, Hua Mulan’s old father got a conscription order and hesitated about whether to let his daughter know about it. The gesture of the father repeatedly handing out and taking back the general’s warrant touched me. I couldn’t help but wonder if, being a father myself, I had acted like that, too. Similarly, seeing Hua Mulan kneel and promise to take up the conscription call on her father’s behalf when she learned he would go, I was completely moved by her filial piety (respect for her elders). Something immediately came to mind—had I ever done such a nice thing for my parents when I was young?

Positive literature and artistic content make people think deeply. In this process of self-reflection, people can enhance their positive energy. At the same time, you will unconsciously improve your morality and make yourself a better person. Such an elevation on the spiritual level will naturally bring about changes in the physical state.

Community band offers free concert with pop, Broadway tunes and classical music

Local pianist Mary Slaton saw a need to establish a community band for people to continue playing music after their high school or college band career, so she established the East Alabama Community Band in May 2012.

Sponsored by the East Alabama Arts Association, the band has grown from 15 members to over 50 from Auburn, Opelika and surrounding cities. Slaton described the band as her baby and said it’s been wonderful to see how it’s grown over the years.

“Sometimes when I go to hear them, it’s all I can do to keep from crying. I’m so excited,” she said.

Slaton started taking piano lessons at 9 years old. She went on to earn a bachelors and master’s degree in music before teaching at Southern Union State Community College. She performed with the community band up until the COVID-19 pandemic hit three years ago.

The band usually performs about four times a year, twice in the fall and twice in the spring. They’ll perform their first concert of the year at 6:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Opelika. The concert is free to the public, but donations will be accepted. The performance will include classical music, pop music and Broadway tunes.

“This will be a little over 10 years since we played there the first time and that was a great concert. We had lots of people that came…” Slaton said.

Joshua Wine is the music director and conductor of the East Alabama Community Band, which has about 50 local members.




Since it was established, the band has had five directors: Michael Marcades, Rusty Logan, Mike Stough, David Alexander and now Joshua Wine.

“(Wine) is a wonderful conductor. He makes everybody excited about the music, because he’s so excited,” Slaton said. “Everyone loves him as a band director, and he’s been instrumental in getting some newer members. He just has done a really good job.”

Wine has also been the band director at Auburn Junior High School for about 11 years. He is the orchestra director at Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn. He learned to play the trumpet when he was in the 7th grade at Wetumpka High School, which led him to pursue a music education major at Troy University and later a master’s degree from Auburn University.

In college, Wine played in the Troy University Sound of the South marching band. He was the drum major for a couple of years. His first job after college was with Auburn Junior High. Wine, who had played in several community bands before, joined the East Alabama Community Band as a trumpet player, and in 2018, Slaton asked him to become the conductor.

“I’m a big fan of community bands,” Wine said. “I like the idea of having multi-generational music making going on.”

The 50 members in the East Alabama Community Band range in age from 18 to 86 years old. Wine loves to see the different generations represented sitting next to each other sharing a passion for music.

“We’re exposing everybody in the band to music outside of their wheelhouse and showing that concert band is not something that all the music was written 100 years ago,” he said.

The community band tries to highlight different genres of music — both old and new —in their performances. They specialize in Wind Band Repertoire, holiday music, folk songs, orchestral transcriptions and pop music like Broadway selections, movie soundtracks and more.

“It’s a way for us to provide music for our community and to expose them to lots of different kinds of music,” Wine said.

Some of his favorite pieces they will be playing on Monday include “Ellington!” arranged by Stephen Bulla, “Urban Dances” by Eric Morales and a ten-minute-long “Sound of Music” medley by Richard Rodgers.

Wine said the “Ellington!” piece is a medley of tunes by American jazz composer Duke Ellington. It’s a a tribute to Jazz Appreciation Month, which is in April.

“When you hear Duke Ellington music played, it’s played by a jazz band. But we have a full concert band ,and it’s a really cool arrangement where we get to hear this music played by a full symphonic kind of sound,” Wine said.

The East Alabama Community Band will perform again in May at the Opelika Sportsplex.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Comedian Kevin Hart will be coming to the Greensboro Coliseum in May.

Hart’s ‘Reality Check’ Tour will be making a stop in Greensboro on May 17 at 7 p.m.

Phones will not be permitted during the show, a rule that Hart and many other comedians commonly enforce while performing.

When you arrive at the Coliseum, phones will be put inside Yondr pouches that will be opened when you leave the event.

Phones may be used during the event only in designated Phone Use Areas within the venue and must be returned to the Yondr pouch before you return to your seat.

Tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster starting on Friday at 10 a.m.

BTS to perform soundtrack for South Korean animated series ‘Bastions’ (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — Popular K-pop group BTS will be performing the opening soundtrack for upcoming South Korean animated TV series Bastions.

According to YonHap News Agency, the series will see the supergroup coming together once again for the show’s theme song.

BTS’ last appearance as a group was through their anthology album Proof which was released in June last year. Since then, the group members have branched out to focus on their own solo careers.

According to the series production house Thymos Media, Bastions follows the story of a group of rookie superheroes. They try to save the earth after learning the identity of a villain who is responsible for environmental destruction.

The animated series is set to air on May 14 on South Korean TV channel SBS.

“BTS is expected to provide an overwhelming sense of immersion to the emotions and action scenes of the series by singing the theme song in perfect harmony,” Thymos Media said.

Although the full song is not out yet, a 30-second teaser of the theme song has made its way to the show’s social media.

Aside from that, Bastions will see K-pop girl group Le Sserafim and singers Heize and AleXa participating on its soundtrack.

When someone says “orchestra” you think classical music, right? Well, Nu Deco Ensemble likes to mix it up.

Not only do they play all types of music, they also bring in guest artists to perform with them. Their next performance is at the Arsht Center, and here’s what you can expect.

Nu Deco is about to change your tune.

Jacomo Bairos, Nu Deco conductor: “Nu Deco is Miami’s 21st Century chamber orchestra that plays music from today’s most eclectic living composers. We reimagine music from the classical world and the popular world, and we work with guest artists of all styles and genres.”

Their music is far from the traditional orchestras you might be used to.

Jacomo Bairos: “We’ve just tried to provide space and opportunity for the instruments of the 21st Century to join with the classical instruments.”

And for this upcoming concert…

Jacomo Bairos: “We’re doing some Paul Hindemith symphonic metamorphosis, Hindemith was a German composer. But the music incorporates jazz and elements of American styles, German styles and folk styles.

They will also be playing tunes from Lauryn Hills’ album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”

Jacomo Bairos: “We’re getting ready to pair some of the most world class, world renowned artists together. First of all, we’ve commissioned Derrick Hodge, who’s an incredible bassist, composer, producer, artist.”

Derrick’s written and performed music with big names like Timbaland and Common. Now he’s dropping some new beats called “Mind of a Dreamer.”

Derrick Hodge: “I wanted to write something that not just sounded cool and thought out but something that really felt relevant to me and ‘Mind of a Dreamer’ is kind of where I am at right now.”

R and B singer Allen Stone is ready to make some magic on stage, and he’s excited to work with the ensemble.

Allen Stone: “When you get to share the stage with fifty really incredible musicians who are reinterpreting your music through a more orchestral lane, it’s super flattering that you as a songwriter has made something that can live in that space.”
