Florence Price (1887-1953)
Florence Price came to prominence ninety years ago when her Symphony No. 1 was the first symphonic work by a Black woman to be played by a major American orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in 1933. 2023 also marks a year of remembrance of Florence Price as she died 70 years ago in 1953. Today we remember Florence Price with the Chineke! Orchestra performing her landmark first symphony. Europe’s first majority-Black and ethnically diverse orchestra, the Chineke! Orchestra’s mission is “Championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music.” Their new recording of the Florence Price Symphony No. 1 is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
