Renowned music composer Pritam has once again joined forces with filmmaker Karan Johar for their upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The collaboration between Pritam and Johar has been fruitful in the past, with successful projects like Kalank and Brahmastra Part One: Shiva under their belt. However, in their latest directorial ventures, Pritam’s involvement goes beyond just composing music – he is almost like a co-creator, as the music plays a crucial role in shaping the narratives of both films.
In an exclusive interview, Pritam shed light on his experience of designing the soundscape for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. He explained that the film is a celebratory one, centered around a family-oriented storyline, in stark contrast to the angst-filled Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Pritam revealed that the nostalgic theme of the movie prompted Karan Johar to desire a “bharpoor” (wholesome) sound, reminiscent of the music from the 1960s. The meticulous attention to detail and calculated moves made throughout the film’s music were in line with this vision. Pritam even incorporated a throwback to the format of songs from that era, featuring two antaras (stanzas), a chorus, and an antara 2, instead of the more widespread format of two antaras with the same melody in the ’90s.
When questioned about the challenges of composing full songs for the movie, Pritam admitted that the current era does not prioritize patience. While Karan Johar had shot complete songs, they had to be condensed during the editing process. Pritam acknowledged that this might have affected the streaming numbers, as shorter songs tend to entice listeners to play them repeatedly. Nevertheless, the decision was made to maintain the authenticity of the ’90s flavor, resulting in elaborate compositions.
Pritam also emphasized his exceptional working relationship with Karan Johar. He praised Johar’s instinctive understanding of melodies, describing him as quick in decision-making and remarkably sure about what he wants. Johar’s openness to change and his ability to evaluate melodies from a fresh perspective further contribute to their successful collaboration. Pritam expressed his admiration for Johar’s talent and felt that it should be preserved for future generations.
The film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani provides an opportunity for both Karan Johar and Pritam to pay tribute to the legends of Indian cinema. Pritam revealed that the entire movie is a homage to the golden era of Bollywood. He crafted the film’s soundscape by reimagining samples of retro music with a modern groove, incorporating elements from iconic songs like Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar and Aap Jaisa Koi. The inclusion of these classic songs was made easier due to the film’s association with Saregama, ensuring the rights to use these beloved tunes.
When asked about the recreation of the iconic song Dola Re Dola from Devdas, Pritam humbly stated that he felt he didn’t do justice to the original. He credited the real magic of the song to the performances of actors Ranveer Singh, Tota Roy Chowdhury, and Jaya Bachchan, as well as the reaction shots captured by Bachchan. Pritam admitted that his contribution to the recreated version was minimal compared to the brilliance of the original.
Finally, Pritam praised the talents of lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya and singer Arijit Singh, both of whom had previously been his assistants. He acknowledged their integral role in creating musical magic and credited their years of experience and shared musical background for their successful collaborations.
With Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Pritam and Karan Johar aim to transport audiences back to the charm and nostalgia of old Bollywood, paying homage to classic music compositions while infusing them with a contemporary touch. Their collaborative efforts promise to immerse viewers in an enchanting world where music becomes an essential part of the storytelling process.
