Meet John Miller, a talented and aspiring musician residing in Orange County whose honest lyrics and captivating melodies have made a mark on the local music scene.
Originally hailing from Kansas City, Miller’s journey in music began at a young age when he picked up the violin in fourth grade. His musical path seemed destined for orchestras and classical performances, but a move to California changed the course of his artistic trajectory. Living in a new and creative environment, Miller discovered a passion for songwriting and credited his father for exposing him to a wide range of music from different eras.
“My dad, who is a few years older than most people’s dads my age, introduced me to a diverse selection of older songs,” Miller shares. “It’s really cool to get a different perspective from what he was listening to. I think that’s one reason there’s sometimes an older audience for some of my songs.”
While Miller’s musical roots may have been grounded in classical training and exposure to older music, his rebellious spirit led him down a different path. Studying musical theater in school, he found inspiration in the storytelling aspect of musicals but desired a more hook-driven and pop-oriented approach to songwriting.
“I really enjoy musicals and their storytelling. But the thing is, a lot of them weren’t written in a hook-driven way,” he says. “In a kind of revolt against it, I decided that I’m going to dive even deeper into writing these songs and make sure they have a damn hook.”
Miller’s music encapsulates a fusion of influences, ranging from iconic bands like Love and Green Day to contemporary artists such as SZA and Dua Lipa. With a diverse range of influences spanning decades, Miller brings a unique flavor to his music that sets him apart from the crowd.
Another element that diversifies John Miller is his commitment to honest storytelling through his lyrics. Miller finds inspiration in everyday experiences, emotions, and relationships. His music delves into life’s ups and downs, offering a light at the end of the tunnel.
“When encapsulating a whole album, I think you can talk about all the awful stuff, all the crazy stuff, all the heartbreak stuff, but then end it with what the light at the end of the tunnel will resemble,” he says.
In May, John Miller is set to release his much-anticipated album, which includes a collection of emotionally charged and introspective songs. The recording process has been a collaborative effort, with Miller playing the guitar and bass while his band members contribute their musical talents on the keyboards and drums. Together, they create a sound that is both guitar-driven and infused with pop elements, showcasing Miller’s versatility as an artist.
Having recently wrapped up a tour, John Miller has several exciting events on the horizon. In June, he is scheduled to perform at notable local venues, such as the Whisky a Go Go on Sunset, The Mint, and the Constellation Room in Orange County. These shows will further establish his presence in the local music scene and expand his growing fan base.
