See Barbie and Ken face the real world as film’s plot is finally revealed in first full trailer

  • In the first full-length trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film, released Thursday, the plot of the movie is finally confirmed.
  • In conjunction with the trailer’s release, the tracklist for Barbie the Album was also announced.
  • And in a new interview, Margot Robbie reveals Gal Gadot was initially the first choice to portray the iconic toy character.

“If you love Barbie, this movie is for you…” but “if you hate Barbie, this movie is for you” too!

In the first full-length trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film, released Thursday, the plot of the movie is finally confirmed.

“To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”

While the abovementioned synopsis may still seem vague, the new clip shows Barbie (Margot Robbie) living her best life until strange things start happening, including developing “flat feet”.

“You have to go to the real world,” Kate McKinnon’s character explains while holding up a stiletto and a Birkenstock. “You can go back to your regular life, or you can know the truth about the universe. The choice is now yours.”

It turns out, however, that she doesn’t get a choice. So, she and Ryan Gosling’s Ken leave the comforts of Barbie Land.

And as you’d expect, the real world is not so great.

In conjunction with the trailer’s release, the tracklist for Barbie the Album was also announced.

The soundtrack features new music from Lizzo, Ice Spice, Haim, Nicki Minaj and Dua Lipa — the latter who stars in the film and sings on the disco-style track Dance the Night Away, the first single released on Friday.

Gosling is also said to feature on the soundtrack.

The trailer and the album announcement come as Robbie was revealed as Vogue’s July 2023 issue cover star this week, celebrating The Summer of Barbie.

Seemingly a perfect fit for her latest role as Barbie, Robbie revealed that the part was initially attached to Wonder Woman 1984 star Gal Gadot.

Gadot had actually been Gerwig’s first choice to portray the iconic toy character.

“Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork,” Robbie said.

Gadot, unfortunately, couldn’t commit to the role at the time, so Robbie stepped in as the lead.

Barbie is slated for a US theatre release on 21 July.
