On Our Radar: Sadé Awele crafts the perfect weekend soundtrack with new single, “Intuition”

If you’re looking for a song to ease you into the weekend, just turn up Sadé Awele’s “Intuition.”

The latest single from the Vancouver-based Nigerian Canadian R&B artist combines honeyed vocals with delicate keys and a groovy bassline, making for a soulful, jazzy track that’s easy on the ears and a perfect accompaniment for a springtime stroll.

In a press release, Awele described “Intuition” as being “dedicated to the unconventional love that cuts across borders to be found.” The song, co-produced by the artist herself, is about trusting yourself to take risks.

Awele, who is heavily influenced by artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Stevie Wonder, has a gorgeous sound that feels both fresh and familiar. She released her debut single, “Count on Me,” in 2018 to critical acclaim from outlets like Exclaim! and was awarded Female Artist of the Year from the African Fashion and Arts Movement (AFAM).

Her first EP, Time Love Journey, followed in 2020 as Awele was selected to participate in Music Publishers Canada’s Women in the Studio Accelerator Program. While the release date is still to be announced, her next EP is forthcoming—and highly anticipated.

If you can’t wait until then, don’t miss Awele when she performs at Polygon Art Gallery’s Groove at the Gallery on April 22, as a live music companion to the exhibition As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic

Sadé Awele performs at Polygon Art Gallery on April 22. Tickets are available online.
